Aviation is something that fascinates men and women of all ages. No matter how familiar it has become, there's still something magical and mysterious about the way an aircraft lifts off the ground and soars through the air above us! There is a rich history in the field, from the first flight, to commercial airlines, to military use. If you’re a plane enthusiast, or if you’re just looking to learn more, take a trip to the Iowa Aviation Heritage Museum, located at the Ankeny Regional airport!
The museum details the history of the Iowa Military and also general aviation history starting pre-WWI, all the way to present day. You can visit the exhibits to see everthing from model displays, photographs, and antique parts, or if you’d rather, you can find a way to get more deeply invested in the museum’s mission of maintaining these aircrafts for the sake of education and recreation. The museum is operated by a team of dedicated volunteers, and volunteers work on various projects and aircrafts to keep their planes in flying condition so they might be used for airshows and other special events. They are always looking for help, and it’s a great way to develop a new hobby!
Soar on over sometime soon for a day full of learning! Have fun!
