All aboard! Diesel trains, trolleys, steam trains, and more! If it rides along a track, the Illinois Railway Museum has it! This museum is located on a large piece of property in the small city of Union. This museum is preserved by a dedicated group of volunteers who are all deeply invested in educating museum visitors about the rich history of railways in the United States. If you’re a train enthusiast, you will enjoy seeing history come to life here as you explore the old train cars, tracks and equipment. If you don’t know much about railway history, fear not! You will certainly find something that intrigues and interests you as you walk around the property. You can view trains being restored in the large barns, ride on the operating diesel, electric, and steam trains on particular days, and wander through the various barns talking to the volunteers who are experts in locomotive history. Viewing the old trains up close will incite a new curiosity about the railway's role in United States history.
The museum isn’t just for adults either! There is lots of room to run around and explore for your younger train enthusiasts. Children will like touching and climbing on the train cars, and will have fun walking along the tracks and train platforms as they learn about the history of railroading. There is a nice playground as well, located near the center of the property, so they can get some good playtime in before you head home. The museum holds special events throughout the year, like the popular "Day Out with Thomas" in August, so be sure to check out their website to see all that’s offered!
