You may not have the time or money to make it to The Bluegrass State for the Kentucky Derby or the Preakness, but you can definitely get yourself to Arlington International Racecourse, in Arlington Heights. Arlington boasts an expansive, and beautiful, facility where you can get a taste of horseracing culture and work your competitive spirit as you place bets on the horses you like best. If you’re a racing novice, there’s plenty of opportunity to learn about the horses and betting strategy. Just be sure to grab a race book and listen to the commentary which is broadcast on the many televisions you can find around the park. You can even place your bet on a nearby computer kiosk so you don’t have to go far when it’s race time!

There’s plenty of seating options too! For a large group, grab a table so you can chat while you enjoy some of the delicious food and drink offerings from the food court. There’s also lots of benches closer to the actual track if you’d like a closer view of the action. If you have young children, bring along a blanket and a picnic and plant yourselves in a comfortable place on the lawn. Lawn seats also provide easy, up-close access, to the horses! There are fun activities held throughout the year to add even more excitement to your day at the races. If you find yourself at the park on Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, or on Derby Day, but sure to arrive early! These are some of the more popular days at the track, and there are many exciting things to enjoy in addition to the races.

If you’re looking for a day of fun for the whole family, check out Arlington, and tell us about it on Instagram using the hashtag #outandaboutwithcompass. On your mark, get set…GO!
