Fireplaces can be a major focal point in a room whether it is a den, bedroom or family room.  Many older homes, especially, have outdated or underutilized fireplace spaces that could use some revamping.  Here are a few ideas on how you can freshen up your fireplace and make your room stand out.

Paint Over Old Brick
Brick fireplaces are classically what you will find in any older homes, but they may not fit your specific style.  One way to change the look of the entire room, without having to spend a lot of money and time, is to just paint over your brick. Neutrals like whites, beiges, and light grays tend to be the easiest to coordinate with other colors for the rest or the room decor.

Build Out Over An Existing Façade
If brick just isn’t your thing at all; you can opt to simply build out over the original.  By doing this kind of makeover, you can give your mantel more emphasis and space for other decorative items.  You also get to pick the materials and textures you want to completely change the look of the fireplace.

Replacing Your Existing Tile Surround

Updating the tile color or design around your fireplace can also be a great way to spice up your mantel. Since you only need a small amount of material, you can search for discounted tile on clearance at your local home improvement store, online or at the local thrift store.

Create a Fake Fireplace
For those people who do not actually have a fireplace, you can create a faux fireplace or even use shelving to create the illusion of a fireplace.  Since you don't have to worry about the surrounding materials catching fire or getting too hot, you can pretty much use any materials you want to create your masterpiece.  For the best visual appeal, choose a large exposed wall or a sizable opening between windows for your “fireplace” location.
